Our world rides on the crest of scientific discoveries and their applications - perhaps more so now than ever before. Theories are central to scientific thinking and questioning is often the first principle in science. The ability to analyse, infer, synthesise, and evaluate is the process of science. Art makers share these processes. Science and art are evolving fields that have always incited heated ethical debate as they push the boundaries of knowledge, technology and social expression. Today both suffer under pressures to produce economic returns - this comes at the expense of pure research and will affect society's long term capacity for uninhibited creativity and critical thought.
The six artists represented in the exhibition Valency interact with science to combine knowledge with understanding through making. The artists come from diverse disciplines and draw upon their varied experiences and differences to explore the dual processes of art and science. Valency creates a unique dialogue that unites enquiry and creativity, and negotiates social and political ethics.
The artists in Valency are Luke Laffan, Anna Gianakis, Avi Amesbury, Bronwen Sandland, Ken Yonetani and Jacqueline Gropp. The curator is Barbara McConchie.
