Anna Gianakis:  Artist

Work by Anna Gianakis

Displaying calculated precision, porcelain installations by Gianakis reference a classical, geometric and mathematically informed aesthetic in which proportion and the co-relationship of positive and negative space is privileged. Her work in Valency continues this investigation using formal devices. In scientific terms, she works in series to examine variance within a possible distribution range. An artistic analysis of her work reveals a reliance on repetition and movement, which is visually fascinating and based on formal pattern. Three installations in Valency engage with physical science to explore the three fundamental states of matter, solid, liquid and gas, which are determined by intrinsic energies at an atomic level. Conceptually Gianakis works on the principle that while volume is constant, configuration is subject to variability specifically related to those states.
